Hello,
reading the class rules brought some questions to mind. I'm not trying to bend and rules just seeking some clarity for myself and others.
One tiller pilot allowed: I'm assuming you mean a standalone tiller pilot, but Raymarine list the EV-100 tiller pilot as a tiller pilot. This is much better than a standard tiller pilot and would be a great advantage, can the EV-100 or NKE hydraulic rams be used ?
GPS, Barometer, Compass, Hand bearing Compass: My Suunto watch has all of these function. does that meet the rules ? If I had 2x Suunto watch and 1x VHF with internal GPS does that meet the 3x GPS?
AIS unit and Radar transponder alarm: Radar transponders do not respond to all types of radar, are expensive and not all boats have radar, can an AIS transponder replace the Radar transponder ? Most boats have an AIS receiver these days.
Electric outboard: Is there a minimum standard of say thrust and runtime? if not somebody may turn up with one designed for a canoe.
Drogue and 60m line: Is a Jordan Series drogue is OK for this.
Finally, solar panels, how about a maximum amount of solar panels (Watts)? I agree that's not very environmental but it would limit the use of autopilot or the larger autopilots above if they're permitted.

Hi Each event will have a Notice of Race and each may be slightly different so the current list of equipment and rules is a general guide not definitive...obviously for the Globe 5.80 Championship there will be different requirements compared to the Mini Globe Race but to answer generally..... 1 ONLY stand alone simple electric drive "Tiller Non interfaced Auto pilots' will be allowed. 2 Your watch would be allowed as a clock and back up GPS only...Baro and compass will not allow Digital. 3 Radar transponders are very effective and highly recommended and the right models work on nearly all radar units ...not compulsory for 5.80 Transat but ECHOMAX UNIT will be for MGR. 4 You must have a functioning AIS transponder and DSC VHF 25w and a Hand held VHF. 5 There will be minimum HP Electric outboard, not decided till sea trials in SEPT. On Paper min 3hp. max 5HP??? only one extra battery. 6 You can use any drogue but remember it is only small Yacht. 7 There is a minimum 50watt @ 12v solar power and 190WATT @ 12V MAX. 8 Wind vanes will be compulsory. 5.80 Transat and MGR There may be other issues in the NOR ...ALL THE BEST..

Hatch questions.
1. The foredeck hatch shall be 50cm x 50cm.
The plans show 42.1cm cutout for the foredeck hatch; has the CNC kit been adjusted to 50cm or will it now need to be adjusted?
2. The Watertight door on the main bulkhead MUST be truly watertight and lockable from both sides.
Is an door in the main bulkhead mandatory ? I would want one, but do I need one ?

Hi Abel...The Kit cut Fore-deck hatch is not to a finished size, as all owners will buy different hatches and it must be trimmed obviously to your hatch. You must have a Hatch with one dimension 50cm...so I am using a 50 x 37 hatch on Trekka...you can use a 50 x 50 hatch...but you must also be able to fit through it to enter that compartment, so if 50 x 37 is too small get bigger YES you must have internal access to the Forward compartment and the smallest Opening must be approx 50 x 50 ...WE will clarify this in the next Builders notes update. All the best..

Will it be cumpulsatory to have taken a US Sailing/ISAF Safety at Sea Seminar? It is for crew in many offshore races in the US.
Thanks, Jack Hull 113

Thanks, Jack Hull 113 Hi..Yes you can see the general requirements in the rules section of the 5.80 web site and also the events page....the Notice of Race will be issued for each event explaining all the fine detail. Hope to see you sailing soon ...Don

Quite Confusing.
I find this site quite confusing. Beside the building of the structure of the boat there are informations and rules spread all over the Forum, Website, youtube updates and facebook builders and fans sites.
The Class Rules section is a wild variety of headlines and it is not clear if something is allowed or vorbidden. Stupid ideas are spread and no one knows if this is an idea to be discussed or a rule.
For example:
1. Windvanes shall be used on the Transat and Globe Race, informations are given that they must be commercial available and on another place is said they can be homebuilt.
2. How many sails are allowed 5 or 7? Are they all included in the "one design standard set" from the sailmaker?
3. Is the actual mast one piece or separable
3. It is said in one of the youtube updates that a electric outboard with ?horsepower can be mounted and a second battery with solar charging is allowed to be used during calms and for the last mile to the habour. Is this meant serious? In reality that means: To be competitive I have to install a e-motor and extra battery with max. solarpower to be able to motor in a sailing race??? Really??? and then: Is it allowed to carge the motor battery from my extra autopilot battery at night??
Can please someone assort the actual rules regarding equipment coastal and offshore, safety, building beyond the building plans. And bring the bugs out!
Have Fun, Michel

The forum is for discussion. Facebook is for creating engagement. If you read everything you'll see that the rules have been discussed and developed over time. The construction rules are in the plans and updates to builders. The definitive equipment and other rules are in Notice of Race for each event, none of which are published yet. I think the answers to your specific examples are pretty clear: 1. Windvane can be commercial product or home built. 2. Sail details are not yet published, and wont be until after sea trials of hull #1. A fair expectation is max 7, selected from: main, jib, A3, A5, storm jib, trysail. 3. Mast can be single piece or two-piece. 4. The full details of electrical system requirements will be in Notice of Race, and vary between events. Plenty of discussion of the implications of the e-motor rules across the sites. Yes, there are implications for design and tactics, but all capabilities are bounded by max-min limits, so there wont be great disparities. All are tradeoffs, more battery for using emotor in calms is more weight to carry, etc.

What do we have to install in our ship, do we have to build an v bed? And do we have to build a kitchen?

What do we have to install in our ship, do we have to build an v bed? And do we have to build a kitchen? I believe that we are free to design those areas ourselves. The 2 bunks port and starboard in the main cabin are a "must have". Cheers, Dan

Do we need a watertight bulkhead in the bow for the Transat?

What do we have to install in our ship, do we have to build an v bed? And do we have to build a kitchen? You must build the Galley Chart area as shown in that spot, but you can make it as complicated or simple as you like...a sink is NOT compulsary....You must have a BUNK in the bow area...that can be any design but MUST be able to secure shut so heavy items can be stored easily under the bunk...if a toilet is fitted then it is modified..basically it cannot be an open area...also that bunk will add strength to the bow panels..good luck..)

Do we need a watertight bulkhead in the bow for the Transat? If your doing any transocean 5.80 events you MUST have the two watertight bulkheads AND Importantly it must be the bulkhead under the mast...NOT the further forward one..Good luck!!
