Hi all! Putting together a chandlery order and been considering a few products for the Mini 580 that i've come across...
Boarding ladder requirements - in the specs here -
- there are outlined the boarding ladder requirements. In an effort to make installing this as painless as possible and reducing the weight of the boat where possible (especially at each end) - can this ladder be used as an alternative to the stainless steel type originally proposed?
Its longer, and potentially stupid proof in that with it mounted on the outside of the boat within hand reach when in the water it cannot be accidentally tied up so it won't lower down into place like the stainless type. (I reckon install it roughly where the red step (or slightly lower) is indicated on the drawing above)
The mounting would need a doubling plate and thorough sealing process just like a through hull (its above the waterline and in the transom, but would of course be a hole in the hull, at least its in the aft watertight compartment) but ultimately it'll be much quicker to put in place, and has zero lead time to get a vendor to fabricate etc... It'll be a bit harder to climb given its not a rigid ladder and perhaps this is a problem. The overall length however is much greater than the stainless one, so less requirement to bring your knees up high to get the bottom step...
just a few thoughts - anyone got any opinions on this?
(also any other good products that you've spotted for your builds! - I'm currently trying to find as many build-time-saving products as I can, as without changing from making almost everything to buying in a bunch of stuff I'm not going to have the boat in the water in time for my sailing pans for this year!)

Hi Pete, I have been thinking about this too. Along the same vein, I saw these www.plastimo.com/en/safety/safety-ladders/echelle-de-securite-a-encastrer.htmlI'm just not sure how easy they would be to use.... I have never used one of these before but I would think the ladder would want to go under the boat when you step on the first rung. With the stainless steel tube ladder, you would need some sort of release mechanism to be able to pull while you are in the water. Then hopefully you are far enough away from the ladder when it releases and falls to the water. It wouldnt feel too good getting hit on the coconut with a 3 step ladder ! Captdan

I've been looking at some of the telescopic stainless boarding ladders. Would prefer to buy something off the shelf than have to have something specifically fabricated. And telescopic would save some space on the crowded transom. Something like this looks to meet the size requirements specified: www.wholesalemarine.com/garelick-telescoping-4-step-transom-ladder.html

Yeah Dan, exactly my thoughts on the flexible ladder types too - the rungs would want to swim away from you under the boat while you try to get your feet into them. I like the one you linked too just for its size. Super compact and easy to fit.
Thats the best looking off the shelf stainless solution I've seen so far - thanks for the link. Avoids the daggerboards, solar mounts, windvane etc... (so much stuff to bolt onto the transom!)

I have already tried going back on board alone with a jacket, overalls and boots filled with water. I really believe that without a rigid ladder I would never have succeeded. my ladder will be solid and rigid like Don's. Give it a try it's fun to know how to do it

WE thought about this long and hard and I agree with many of the suggestions here >..BUT....they all have flaws some more than others when it counts...that is why you will see exactly the same arrangement as the 5.80 on many of the serious class boats like Class 40 and the Beneteau Figaro 3 boats etc...believe me when your solo if you ever need to use it, you do not want anything that is flexible as you will not find your footing because the boats are VERY dynamic , so the design of the fixed ladder is simple to build when making your rails , simple to mount , easy to grab when in trouble and will take side loads ...so everyone can make the same and as a class event organiser, we know all are able to use it at sea in a seaway in a critical situation soo this will be part of the 5.80 Class Rule ..Thanks...

Just bumping this... In just over a week the 2021 5.80 Transat starts Yay!! I have noticed though that every boat seems to have a different boarding ladder than required (except Origami, Boat 47)... Has there been another discussion or directive somewhere else that allows different ladder designs? I can't seem to find anything in the builders updates... Just want to know if I missed something as I am in the process of designing one! Cheers... And all the best to the Transat skippers!

I remember hearing Don say in one of the youtube updates that the original spec for boarding ladders was out the window, since several builders had already bought off the shelf ladders. Looking at the transat boats I see quite a few things that don't match my understanding of the class rules, but there are so many changes it is impossible to keep track.
