Just beginning to think about the luxurious interior finish that will be the hallmark of these boats... I like Don's idea of a two stove setup. A jet boil for water boiling (I already have one from mountaineering/ ski touring trips and they are fantastic), and some kind of simple single burner alcohol stove for actual cooking tasks. The problem i'm finding is that the Origo 1500 single burner alcohol stove appears to be discontinued, and they are like rocking horse poop on ebay. Anyone got any ideas for a quality alternative (ideally with gimbals and pan fiddles) that is available?

I was planning on the jet boil being enough and just relying on "boil bag" meals and cups of tea! But a burner would be great if it could fit OK, are you planning a 4 way gimbal. I suppose the boat will pitch front and back a fair bit?

Actually I have been constructing the galley cabinet this past week. I have fitted a small rectangular sink and have left the rest of the countertop solid top until I sort out a suitable stove or something. I have been looking at these multi-fuel burners that can be converted in to a single burner stove arrangement. The brand that I know about is MSR and I will put a link below. What I found interesting was in this video a guy made a gimbaled bracket to hold the MSR and it seems like a good idea. MSR gimbaled video is here www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDjRy90NAvIMSR stove is here www.msrgear.com/ca/stoves/liquid-fuel-stoves/dragonfly/11774.html

Hi Pete - They appear to be discontinued from that site and all others I can find. For some reason they leave the product pages up though... Can't get through on the phone either.
Hi Dan/Joe - This is a great point about pitching, the youtube link is a good one. I might try to copy this design. I have a 20 year old MSR XGK that has done many, many miles on my back in various places around the world. Its probably not the best one to adapt into this as it has the rigid pipe that stabilises the stove from the bottle, but i'm familiar with how solid, servicable and generally reliable the stoves are. I might give making a gimballed version a go and see how it comes out. If successful then i can leave the jetboil at home!
The idea of using a large stainless pan as the basis of the stove support is genius.

Hi Guys
Yes that video is spot on for the fully gimballed stove, I think thats the answer. Good video. I've got a few more weeks before I can turn the boat over and start fitting out the inside, can't wait. Thats the bit Ive been looking forward to.
Captdan - the sink and cabinet sounds good, fun to make!

In the same Kind of stove there is the Primus omnifuel. Very efficient (2years bicycle travel with) and Lifetime warranty

I think I like that one better than the MSR ! Thanks for your incite I really like the general idea of having a multifuel option. no issues with wondering if your next port has the correct fuel for your stove. I have been stuck before with the marina not having propane for example .... Captdan

Just think to this now about the Primus (but it's the same for the MSR), when used with Petrol/gasoil/kerosen you need to pre-heat the burner first. This operation is producing an open flame that can go up to 30-50cm high and this for about an aprox 20-30 second. I'm Not sure that is very prudent/safe (or Both) to operate inside the boat. Anyway, Both of the Primus and MSR are working very Well and are very efficient with propane/butane, Petrol, gasoil and jet A.

If you use any liquid fuel besides white spirits (white gas/ coleman fuel) in any of these multifuel stoves it will produce a lot of soot. I'd eat cold oats for breakfast before I did it inside my boat. Potential flare-ups during startup (Marco's note above) are also a risk I wouldn't take inside the boat, particularly in a seaway.
(based on experience using Coleman, Primus and MSR multifuel stoves 20+ years and as a guide/outfitter)
