Hi
I'm getting a couple of quotes for trailers, based in UK, hope to do the Portugal race, so want a trailer that could handle long trips in the event I cannot sail there.
I looked for a J24 trailer design, so keel on. Seems fairly straightforward for that spec. Twin axle. Downside it not very stable on motorways, but proven to work.
I thought the 580 keel is going to be pretty easy to remove, guitar string to break the bond. I'll oversize drill the keel bolt holes and epoxy fill then drill holes to size to make more durable.
With the keel removed the boat can sit on a low bunked trailer and will be much more stable.
I think I'll always need a sling to launch and recover the 580, so keel on/off then.
Maybe a 8mm rubber pad would work as a gasket between keel and boat to avoid sikaflex or similar for shorter periods?
Anyone thought about a trailer design yet ?
Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe, I have a trailer that was designed for a 22ft bilge keeler. So I need to extend the bunk support posts ( 4 of them ) by about 50cm. They will land on Frame D1 and Frame A. Mine is a single axle rated for 1600kg. I think that will be plenty since it does have a long tongue and that will make for better towing and weight balance. My guess is that I could probably launch it from the trailer but I think putting it back on would be a challenge at a boat launch ramp .... You can see my trailer on my blog. The video showing the hull being turned. Cheers, Captdan
