So this question will eventually be asked as more boats come on line so I might as well be the one to get it out in the open early... It is quite a common practice in plywood boat building where there can be build ups and overlaps of glass taping underneath the main sheathing layers to cut/route a rebate in the ply which equals the thickness of localised glass taping in areas such as chines, gunwales, the stem and transom joins etc, areas that are well supported by interior structural elements. These rebates can vary in depth but can commonly be 1-2mm (thickness of cured fibre/resin) and equal the width of the glass fibre tapes. It is usually done with a power planer or a router. The main reason this is done is to eliminate the localised bumps created by tapes and their overlaps which has the knock on affect of making the fairing job quite a bit easier as well as requiring quite a bit less fairing material. There appears to be no practical structural negatives. So, are 5.80 builders allowed to employ this building technique?

OK yes interesting subject, but because builders are of differing skills and it all could go wrong if not right...we do not approve it....we have plenty of tolerance here and we are not trying to shave weight to the limit....it was not done on Trekka and it is not drawn in the plan so it will even out if using standard laminates and filler....and not cause any major issues ... thanks..

Many thanks for this... I fully intended to do this as it is pretty much standard fare in my little part of the world... glad I asked! Cheers
