Hello all, I'm 36 and farther of two daughters who is working as a registered nurse in sunny Queensland Australia.
I've been taking part as crew in some offshore racing the past few years most notably the 75th Sydney to Hobart.
I have completed my RYA coastal skipper practical but haven't sat a yacht master offshore exam yet. I have also completed a sea safety survival course and obtained an LROCP radio certificate.
The 5.80 class has me intrigued and dream of taking part in a transpac race in a yacht I built my self. I see there is a 2025 race proposed but this still seems a difficult dream to achieve.
Boat build: I recently completed a 3.5m CLC passage maker from plans provided by Denman marine for my eldest daughter to learn to sail. I have a friend who is a qualified boat builder who could help with the 580 and have found out that Denman marine offer 580 CNC kits.
The problem becomes funds.I estimate I'd only have enough to complete the bare hull. So any ideas how you could fund raise?
Sailing experience: the step up from coastal/ offshore sailing to ocean sailing is significant. My rough thought would be complete the 580 build, try a Brisbane to Gladstone race, choose a Pacific island to sail to, keep an eye out for a possible 580 trans Tasman race... I'm open to suggestions, a Pacific delivery would probably be beneficial also.
Any suggestions of how to turn this dream into reality would be greatly appreciated. Congrats to all who have managed to make a start

This is always the biggest challenge and there is only one simple answer...how bad do you want it...if it is total passion and commitment..and your prepared to sacrifice...then you will make it happen not matter how long it takes and what it costs in time and money...growing a family is a HUGE adventure, so you will need to make choices? and there is only one person that can make it happen and that is you...you need to get started if you decide you want it that bad..there is no easy answer, but you must set priorities...no one will pay you to go have fun...but they may join you if your already going and have a good story, a growing social media file, good sailing experience and can attract some media. So unless you have a serious benefactor able to give you money cause they like you, if you want it bad.. YOU have to make the first move....do your budgets and complete the bare hull and then work out how to build the deck....everything in life sadly cost money and you will need to work out where you need to allocate your available funds.. hope that helps...I am a great believer that everything is possible if you want something bad enough....if you do not want it bad enough...?? it is probably not. So good luck..but your not alone by the way...I had a plan to get into space many years ago..it got very close..but then the Russian mafia got involved and risk and cost increased dramatically, so I had to pull the pin on that...I accept that I cannot do everything but I have done somethings that many said were not possible...cause I wanted it really badly... Good luck and hope to see you sailing a 5.80.
