For those thinking about electrical grounding for lightening, there is a good starting point for your research in here: A lot of the article does not apply since 5.80 don't have inboard motors. But regarding lightening protection and regarding galvanic corrosion, this is right on the money for me. www.westmarine.com/WestAdvisor/Marine-Grounding-SystemsFor the 5.80, the risk of corrosion in the keel really depends how it is built and going to be used. There are dissimilar metals in the steel keel, lead bulb and (316) stainless keel bolts. The least noble metal in that system is the steel, so it would corrode first through galvanic corrosion. If the steel and lead are fully encapsulated in epoxy so that the metals remain electrically isolated, then there is no potential for galvanic corrosion. That would probably require using non-metallic washers under the bolts and nuts, and fiberglass tubes lining the bolt holes to prevent any metal to metal contact. Then, even when the epoxy coating of keel or bulb is damaged, there would not be galvanic corrosion because the different metals would remain isolated. A zinc sacrificial anode would protect the steel in the event the epoxy coating of the steel is damaged. minor damage is probably not much of an issue during racing. While in a marina (where stray currents can greatly speed galvanic corrosion), a wire clipped to a keel bolt and slung over the side with a zinc anode on the end would protect the keel. If the boat is going to live in the water, then a zinc sacrificial anode through bolted to the keel makes good sense.

Because the 12v power load of the 5.80 is relatively low and simple and using the electric outboard for propulsion is allowed...we only allow solar charging..with a battery and panel upper limit or as you say it could mean motoring all the time... ...

The class rules state only AGM or Gel batteries and the MGR PNOR says Lithium, AGM or GEL are allowed. Was there a change to allow lithium for the MGR that I missed somewhere? I really don’t want to have to run AGM batteries. Thanks all! Josh - Hull #157
