What is the purpose of the small hatch aft of the mast? It is a compulsory feature for the class, but it's purpose is not apparent to me. I would gave preferred the extra deck space.

Hi...for ventilation and to look up at the rig....some use the boat for micro cruising and if sailing long distance in the tropics it will help ...so all for one and one for all so no one is disadvantaged....TREKKA II has a bigger than normal one..and I am using a Plastimo cowl Vent and two mushroom vents but there are various options with a three a minimum requirement...I am fitting fourth on the mast deck hatch as well on Trekka as I have an airtight companionway hatch....My mast hatch will be hinged on the forward edge so it can be opened with slight spray around and my foredeck hatch will be hinged at the back to scoop air, not normal for an ocean going yacht but for a 5.80mtr boat very appropriate...I am also using 5mm EVA SEADEK foam deck tread as best crawling non skid and bums on cocpit seats or knees on seats working deck lines and also great insulation on deck. TEKKA II will to Globe Transats and many Ocean events and live onboard in ports to save money...Thnx
