Great to see all the thought going in on this Forum .....from Class Globe 5.80 perspective...It is a small boat and with three watertight compartments. We have thought the best way to address the bilge pumping is the have an opening/closing drain or bung in the Water tight bulkheads from forward and aft into the central section/saloon and then use the electric and one manual pump of 1.5inch diameter to get rid of the water, so if the forward compartment floods..you can go through the deck hatch to solve the leak, bucket it out or from the saloon open the drain, let the water flow into the saloon and pump out. Same for aft...open cockpit locker to check inside, solve the leak, bucket out etc, but at any time you can open the drain inside the saloon to see if you have water in either compartments, if so you can use the electric pump to pump out. You must have the manual pump able to operate from the cockpit while on the helm (could be last resort??) so that means in a storm with companionway shut from below you would have to use the electric pump to get rid of water. Usually on all boats you must have a manual pump operable from below and another from the cockpit...it is a small boat and we are trying to keep it simple, but looks like we may have to also follow the norm and have a manual 1 inch manual pump operable from below. I would then suggest this has a coiled flexible suction hose so if the boat is heeling you can place the suction where you need it?, not to stop the boat sinking, but just to get to the water...then again a good quality chunky sponge and a bucket can move that annoying water easily too?? so I suppose there are two issues...getting water out to stop the boat sinking and getting water out that is annoying and stuck in all the little places??
I will use the sponge and squeeze into the galley sink for annoying water...Yes I am having a sink and 1 inch drain through skin fitting and valve and a real bunk cushion...haha thinking of the mini 6.50 guys laughing right now!
The electric pump will let you work on the leak while it pumps, the cockpit pump lets you keep pumping while on the helm, the water tight compartments should keep you afloat if your flooded??....but should we now do as is the norm, and make an internal pump Mandatory.....I think we MUST??
