I see from the rules that no log or electronic wind instruments are allowed. I understand and agree with the principal of keeping costs down and not giving advantage to those who can/ want to spend more. However a log would be a very useful aid to navigation when dead reckoning and estimating position. A complete electronic log set up can cost under £200. Wind speed and direction would also be a valuable tool for forecasting again at not a huge cost.
Both these instruments can also give extra information to assist the sailor but are they really something that some would choose not to have due to cost?
To prohibit more expensive instruments restrictions could be placed on extra functions so that only instruments with basic log, speed, wind speed and direction could be used.

Hi...it is all about keeping it simple and attuning yourself with the elements...once you start sailing without instruments you find it quite satisfying...GPS is allowed and very inexpensive..if you lost everything and needed DR it is surprisingly accurate to estimate your speed every hour and mark your log accordingly to keep up...yes it is more of a challenge but not unsafe...wind instruments are not needed...so a few Handheld cheap GPS units will give you all you need and one less hole in the hull. If your worried about competitive club racing you could fit solar wifi units for wind and remove them for Class globe 5.80 events...Same to for a log...just pull the impeller out blank off , remove the instrument head and leave behind for our 5.80 Races...that is fine...but you will see the NOR for official events will be NO electronic log or wind ...THNX

Just a quick query on electrical, given that GPS is allowed, does that mean a chartplotter can be installed providing no wind instruments etc are installed?
