Want a 50cm x 10mm Dome for your 5.80..... On TREKKA I will fit an Acylic Dome made in Poland. They cost Euro$200 ex factory in Clear Acrylic. Grey Acrylic is much better, Heaps better similar to deck hatches, but to get that they need to make a minimum of gey 8 Domes? ...if you would like an Astro Dome for your 5.80 message me and maybe we can make a bulk order. Each would be responsible for their own cost of frieght and sending the money direct to the factory as your own order. I am just making a list of hopefully seven other builders to create the order. If I get seven I will send the list to the factoy, then we order your domes all at the same time? You would need to agree to send your order once we are full. They need to be ordered at the latest LATE AUGUST... ..thanks The picture shows the Clear dome is 50cm..Bette grey Attachments:

I am fitting a deck hatch for my companionway opening and NOT fitting the Obsevation POD...so a flat deck...then fit the Dome as shown in the drawing..If TREKKA was NOT doing the Mini Globe Race...I would absolutley fit the Observation Pod, as it gives more headroom and a feeling of space down below and the standard companionway and entry is fantastic for living aboard and sailing the tropics o having fiends onboard...very social...so my choice is very specific..survive a BIG storm...not just a transatlantic..

So this gives me some pause... Is the observation pod something that should be avoided for those doing the Globe? While I think I understand the issues that would make the dome "safer" isn't the issue the use of washboard/sliding companion way closure? My approach was to hybridize the two and use the pod but have a deck hatch in the companion way.
The flat deck is a point I hadn't thought through.

You know there is a real fun factor about the 5.80 and any boat...we are all different and have individual ideas. WE like ou personal touches and individual ideas. Within reason NONE are right or wrong...our ideas are formed by inspiration and research...and there are many ways to skin a cat!!..so the companionway and Obs. Pod. as drawn are all part of my and Janusz ideas and they work for any voyage anywhere in the world. BIUT I know sailors have difeent ideas about companionways and OBS PODS/Bubbles. So I will really miss my OBS POD cause it would make the interior of the boat feel MUCH BIGGER...and the big companionway is the same..so cool getting in and out..great ventilation sailing in the tropics and so good for crew sailing...look at every Mini 6.50...the companionways are all like basicaly the same and it works well...so I am a little worried some may copy my Southern Ocean set up and never get there and then get pisssed off with the little entry hatch. We designed the OBS POD and lifting companionway for a reason..it works and is perfect...I am NOT going to sail the Mini Globe Race ( I think? ) cause I will have to organise and manage it?? but some one will and I know if I was? ..I want to stay dry down below, even upside down.. and having sailed solo around the world with a bubble I know they are very cool...but for every other occasion the OBS POD is cooler ...happy sailing...

I understand the reasons. I guess my question is less about “pod vs no pod” but if changing the companionway to a hatch would achieve the same security for rollover?

Changing from std. lifting companionway hatch into top of Obs Pod to an opening deck hatch hatch will do two things...allow you to put a window in the roof of the Obs Pod to look up, and will make it slightly harder to get in and out of the boat...BUT the companionway acces will be airtight so good in a roll over

My first idea was an opening deck hatch, with a Obs Pod on top and no sliders. But now I'm thinking of a pod with a bubble on top, is there any problem with height or is it overkill ?
