A mast sections used on a 5.80 MUST be on the approved list of sections on the 5.80 website. There is a process (on the website) to approve up to two sections in each country. Any boom setion may be used. An owner can build their own mast and make their own riggging. Extra standing and running rigging can be used but all existing standing rigging must be used. Any headsail and Gennaker furling may be used. Sparcraft and Selden sections are approved and Quotes are being organised now. A suggested sample specifications from them and one Polish mast builder who will build a rig using the same section and fittings as per the 5.80 Plans (which should be extremely good value) will be listed here when available. You can approach your local Sparcaft /Selden agent if you decide to use them, or import from the Polish mast builder to any couty in a 5mt tube complete.
The Evolution of the Rig explains why there are runners and when to use them. The Rig Janusz originally designed did NOT use runners and had only one Gennaker. I decided if I was sailing in the Southen Ocean under Capetown, or in a big storm and had a deep reeefed mainsail set, I would like to strap the Rig down really well for a knockdown or rollover with a running backstay, that cleared the mainsail. Janusz agreed to that, so it is NOT needed when sailing normally at all. My runners will be spectra 6mm rope ( the only appoved use for High Tech Fibers on the boat under class rules-3mm wire is much cheaper!) and usually left forward at the mast, so sailing is simple. You do NOT use the Runners normally.
WE then decided that the BIG Gennaker could be bigger! increaseing fun factor and we can hoist that higher using those Runners cause they are there!!!, so that is the only time they assist helping secure the mast, when using the big Gennaker! Even then the mast should not fall down when running without them anyway. They are there to add security and you can use them when ever you want or think needed for extra security. The choice is yours..
BUDGETS to build your own mast, boom and standing rigging could be as low as Euro$1500, or an off the shelf racing rig from a big brand Euro$5000?? or with the works?...good luck
