Apologies another Wood question. Am I OK to use American Ash for the stringers? I have assumed as it’s inside the boat and will be protected/painted/varnished it’s durability isn’t an issue. It’s significantly cheaper than Oak but has good strength and working abilities (apparently). I am planning on Oak for the keels and mast supports etc. Thanks HI...I try decrease my work load...lol...google the properties of Pine...then do the same for your American ash...look at densities and strength...then tell my that they are the same or better and I will say YES ...there is a bit of latitude there and we understand there is different wood in each country but you need to satisfy yourself first so good luck...same with OAK...there is Oak and Oak ...so best to check the detail with Google first thanks and good luck!!...THNX....Don....it sounds good timber though!!

... "there is oak and oak". Nothing is more true when you see a demo of differences ...
A Brit called Leo is rebuilding a 110 year old, Albert Strange design, 40' boat that was a Fastnet winner named "Tally Ho". He has a great Youtube video series that offers lots of advice on different woods & their characteristics. One recent video shows the difference between 2 US oaks that look exactly the same. One that wicks water as you watch & breaks with a mallet blow was inadvertently included in an order - it would have been a disaster to use it & he missed the problem himself until one of his volunteers brought it to his attention,
You van Google "Tally Ho boat restoration Leo" look for the oak demo approx Ep 73.

Has anyone received their white oak timbers in the U.S? I have not yet been able to source any.

Hi Peter, I think reading between the lines that an equivalent strength species for the stringers in fine. I'm planning on using Douglas fir. To add to you question though, I'd like to use Sapele for the keel floors, from the info online, it's slightly better that Oak and it glues well. Admin - Is it OK to substitute the keel floors for an equivalent or stronger wood too?

Has anybody worked out what lenght of timber is needed in the dimensions as per plan e.g. - how many metres of 55x25mm - how many metres of 100x25mm - and how many metres for stringers which are again different widths (30, 50 or 70)?
Need to get some quotes for timber so need to provide some more details of what I need. If I go to a timber supplier with a request for 0.3 cubic meters of pine timber someone's gonna have a good laugh. It can be calculated from the plans but I'm hoping someone's already done the homework. Much appreciated if you can share.

If it's any use, here are my figures for wood I still have to get. I bought a kit and had the company include the wood for the hull stringers. So these are my figures for the mast bridge or the smaller stringers for the cockpit.
Mast Bridge Timbers 2 posts, 1320 x 60 x 50 { Oak } 5 keel pieces, 1200 x 70 x 60. { Oak } 6 header pieces of 830 x 60 x 25 { Douglas fir }
Douglas fir cockpit pieces, 8 of 200 x 30 x 22 4 of 220 x 22 x 22 4 of 200 x 22 x 22

Thank you. Next question: is there anybody else out there building from plan rather than kit? Hi I am building by Plans. Here is my blog sailorturks.wixsite.com/580buildI think that there are more building from kits but I think the "real boat building experience" comes from constructing everything from raw materials cut by hand ..... I am saying this just to ruffle some feathers of the KIT builders !! Possibly there should be some way of distinguishing the KIT boats from the HANDBUILT boats ..... Maybe sail #'s or the Hull #'2 have a K or a H at the end of them ..... Captdan

Thank you. Next question: is there anybody else out there building from plan rather than kit? Hi...Trekka II is built from plans and remember that the main bulkhead and mast support on the kit boat is in a very slightly different position than the plans built boat...the hull lines remain the same and mast position but it is slightly different as mentioned in the kit instruction video so do not mix the two up all the best...

Capt Dan,
Ruffle all the feathers you want !
I've built from raw materials before and I know which I prefer, but I do admire you for doing it.

captdan: I've been following your Youtube channel in admiration. I considered building from scratch for weeks... well actually 2 months. I'm still on the fence but I'm starting to lean towards building from kit. While I'm pretty handy and generally good at figuring things out I've had instances where even after a bunch of research and talking to friends and acquaintances who are more knowledgeable about boat building I still felt pretty clueless. jimschofield - so you would wholeheartedly recommend a kit?
