The 5.80 is all about wood, Certified Marine Plywood, Frames, Stingers, Keel floors etc...and the tools to manage it.

Hi Don, can you provide me the adress from the shop where you bought the marine plywood in Italy for Trekka? I`m living in switzerland and often go to Italy. This would be the easiest way that i can get the right marine plywood and start building my 5.80. Thank You!

HELLO DON, HELLO BUILDERS. Does anyone know if the elliotis pine is ok to make the frames ?? And will it be better with the bug treatment? or perhaps without the process. Another question I have is with the wooden spreaders ... There is no Ash in the area (South America, quite south). What will be the best replacement I can get to make them I also ask about the railings, what will be the best wood for them? Any data I will appreciate it very much !!

Hi Adol...I am not a wood expert so cannot answer as not aware of what you have there...but the best way is to look up the qualities of the timber on Google and you can compare....or ask another boat builder there....Frames are important to be strong and no Knots...then you will seal it with epoxy so bugs should not be a worry?? but ask around..maybe someone will help you here?? for the SPREADERS it needs to be light and strong...and seal them well to keep the weather out... the other thing it to make sure you keep them sealed or treated as maintenance is the key to long life and safe ...you could also consider other materiel's as well...for hand rails you need a hardwood...strong?? or you could even make them from plywood..and seal them well...On TREKKA I will use aluminium for making the hand rails and you MUST USE Stainless steel for pushpits and pulpit, Stanchions...NOT Aluminium...they need to be STRONG ...all the best and good luck...

Hi Don, Thanks for your comments !! they are important for me. I made the pre-consultation comparisons, elliotis pine looks good. I was just looking for Daddy's approval of the class ... Regarding the spreaders, I will consult here, which is the best wood for that matter .... Then I can start with the handrails .... I will use a hard wood ...

another query ... To glue the woods together would use Epidian 6011 epoxy resin ?? There is no such product around here ... If we have Kekol K-300 Two-component adhesive with excellent thixotropy, high elasticity and quick drying, without water or solvent content. Its formulation prevents the transfer of moisture to the wood, making it possible to polish and laminate wood floors, immediately after 24 to 36 hours after laying them on substrates such as cementitious folders, concrete, ceramics, marble, tiles, slabs and / or underfloor heating. Will this product be a good replacement? Any comments or suggestions are welcome

Hard wood providers in the UK seem to be limiting the lengths of hard wood stock for the structural ribs/chines, so may have to slice them together to get the boat length required. Is anybody else finding that too?

Is anybody else finding that too? Yes you will see on the TREKKA Builders Blog reference to SCARF joints in the stringers etc...very normal...it is harder to get first grade no knots , fine grain timber in longer lengths... good luck.

Hi Don,
I live about 1 mile from where John G built his Trekka - she is now in storage at the Victoria Maritime Museum.
I can't find the list of kit mfrs on the website - only how to buy the plans.
Can you post a list of all the cnc kit mfrs.
Thanks,
Adrian

Apologies another Wood question.
Am I OK to use American Ash for the stringers?
I have assumed as it’s inside the boat and will be protected/painted/varnished it’s durability isn’t an issue. It’s significantly cheaper than Oak but has good strength and working abilities (apparently).
I am planning on Oak for the keels and mast supports etc.
Thanks
