There are so many choices to be made if you are intending to Race your 5.80. It all makes a difference to the cost of your sails and pefomance of your 5.80. It has to be "FUN" and that pretty much says fully batten mainsail in my book..but is Tri-Radial going to hold it's shape longer over the years and let you sail the shape better by adjustment, with your intepetation of the conditions, against using a Cross-cut sail??...it should. But at what cost? and if your club racing against other boats, do you want a cross-cut?? when the others all probaly have Tri-Radial. And then there is sailcloth, what type and weight, lighter cloth is less weight aloft!!! This read including the attached video may answer some of your questions if you are not familiar with the subject.. www.precisionsailloft.com/blog/crosscut-and-triradial-sails/The JIB has real Tri-Radial advantages and then there is the Issue of Hanks? or roller reefing and of the Assymetic spinnakers and furling systems running on the bowsprit?? Let us know what you would do for your 5.80 sail set and while a Trysail is not manditory, would you want one?...what sails and how many would you carry with the 7 sail max limint doing a 5.80 TransOcean event? Thanks...

Hi there, I like these considerations by RichH:
•A dacron cross cut is more easily 'adjustable' for desired shape .... just add tension to a single 'edge' and the shape will change. (shifting the 'point of maximum draft more forward' occurs with increased halyard tension, etc.) •A dacron radial or part-radial will be more difficult to adjust for desired sail shape. •A hybrid radial dacron w/ lighter weight luff section will be midway between the two ... but will last longer because the vulnerable leech section panels will be 'stronger' because of their heavier weight in the leech.
A triradial will last a bit longer but can also be more expensive, I think about 25% extra would be about reasonable.
Full battened main with three reefs, and a-symmetrical with top-down endless furler.

Quote....However, with innovation from companies woven Dacron has become a viable option for tri-radial constructed sails. Challenge Sailcloth’s Warp-Drive sailcloth was the first innovative cloth to have a warp-oriented weave. Tri-radial sails are better for performance as they allow more control over the designed shape of the sail. This increased strength and design ability allows tri-radial sails to maintain their sail shape over their lifespan without the stretching of a crosscut sail. ...end I know some will not be Racing their 5.80...but if the budget allows I think Tri-Radial has some big pluses....sailing and for the long term budget.... ..THNX

I will prefer full batten and tri-radial mainsail / job / genoa - better control/stability - longer life let see what it will be
