Hello everyone,
I'm spending the winter (Michigan, US) preparing my workspace. My plan is to begin building (Hull 162) in July. I have a bunch of questions, but will spread them out over time. For now, I'm curious if anyone has a decent estimate for the weight of the hull when they flipped it. I have doubts that the rafters in my garage will be sufficient to hold the weight, so I'm considering building two wooden gantry cranes. Knowing an approximate weight will help me finalize that decision.

Hi Kevin, I dont know what the exact weight would be, however, I would do it differently if I had to do it again. Check out my blog.... I would consider using system at each end of the boat where by you would rotate the boat on a horizontal axis (I had thought of doing this but then had access to a small excavator ) If you can picture 2 large engine stands ..... If you can get the weight off of the floor while the jig is under it, then go under and remove all of the jig components. I would guess that the jig weighs about 30% of the whole boat at that point. One of the other guys had done that this past spring and it worked really well. Check out Kolibri - they used a sling system with rollers on a modified shackle - hoisted it up and 4 guys rolled it on the slings in about 1 minute. Cheers !

Thanks, Dan! I like your suggestion on rotating on a horizontal axis and appreciate your estimate on the weight. Checking out Kolibri, it looks like they relied on the workspace structure to ultimately carry the load. However, I could do something similar with two temporary gantries. In my case, the garage rafters are spaced 5+ feet apart at a length of 24' each, I really think I'd be pushing it if I loaded them up with the hull.

Along one truss could be an issue and I'd try and pick up at least two and put a stiffener in between so they do not collapse in and verticals. I have 2x5Ton OTC in the warehouse I'm building in so not an issue for the flip but I'm probably going to move it to a building like yours (30'x25'on 48"spacing) once fliped and I was thinking about how I was going to lift it to put the keel under and move onto the trailer so keen to hear what you come up with.

I have flipped my hull and a friend's hull simply with the help of some friends and the promise of a barbecue and a few beers I show you the videos in case they are useful to you. My hull. With the building frame/jig attached and hull glassed mine weighs 1000lbs/450kg, that’s with a calibrated scale on a crane. I’m BnB kit with 1200g/m fibreglass. I can’t see any one being much heavier than that. If I was calling for a price for a crane id tell them 500kg, note the Center of gravity is a long way forward and you’ll want a spreader bar or long slings to distribute the load on the corners.
