IMPORTANT!!!! This thread is ONLY for comment/reply by active 5.80 builders listed in the MORE section of the 5.80 Website go to BUILDERS BLOGS..as only YOU know how much your spending. we do NOT want comments or opinions of non builders here...THANKS
The Biggest question I am asked is HOW MUCH TO BUILD a 5.80? well the answer is how long is a piece of string? There was a lot of guesswork in the beginning and standards have been very high and we realised as we moved forward we all want VERY GOOD boats so cost went up. Now we have 50 builders who can finally give their experience. I will list my opinion below and what is included in each category ...then below that there is a blank list of headings. To reply copy the blank list of headings then put your opinion of what your costs are as an actual builder.
Finally remember you do not need Euro$30,000 to start building. you need enough for plans, plywood, structural timber, glass and epoxy, tools and find a space to build..then get started. you will be surprised how satisfying it is to see your completed hull and strangely most will find the money to complete...I always have even for the BOC challenge in 1990...all my boats I just start and if you believe in a dream it WILL Happen. Good luck
All prices here include VAT and are in Euro. Different countries will have different costs. This is PLAN Building NOT KIT purchase. All includes delivery and any import tax duty. This is my opinion of an AMPLE BUDGET and you can probably drop it 15% if you shop well and think smart. If you are not building to Class Certification and some are, build your own mast, SS rails, keel, simple electrical and do everything your self, use salvage timber for JIG, buy good used hatches and equipment, buy used trailer and modify etc, you could be sailing for Euro$25,000 easily...so good luck! Hope to see you sailing soon!
